The Webster County Board of Education is pleased to announce that it will host a West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) Modified Coaching Course on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Webster County High School.
This course is designed for individuals who wish to become authorized to coach in West Virginia public schools and serves as an important first step toward obtaining coaching authorization for non-certified individuals.
The registration fee for the course is $275.
The WVSSAC Modified Coaching Course provides instruction covering coaching principles, sports first aid, and West Virginia rules and regulations. Participants must attend the entire course to receive credit. Following the course, participants are required to successfully complete three online examinations, earning a minimum score of 80% on each assessment, within six months of the course date. These requirements are established by the WVSSAC.
Completion of the course alone does not authorize an individual to coach in West Virginia public schools. After successfully completing all WVSSAC course requirements, individuals seeking to coach who are not otherwise eligible through a valid West Virginia teaching or substitute permit must also:
Be approved by a local county board of education for a coaching position.
Complete any required fingerprinting and background check requirements.
Apply to the West Virginia Department of Education for a Coaching Authorization (Form 39).
Meet all applicable eligibility requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education.
The West Virginia Department of Education issues coaching authorizations on an annual basis, and authorizations must be renewed each year in accordance with state requirements.
"This course provides an excellent opportunity for community members who have a passion for working with student-athletes to begin the process of becoming a qualified coach," said Joseph Arbogast, Superintendent for Webster County Schools. "Our schools are always looking for dedicated individuals who are committed to mentoring students through athletics while promoting sportsmanship, safety, and positive leadership."
Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
